Day 38

First of all, thank you so much for all the support I’ve been receiving on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. I love each one of you. :)

Quick update on my juice fast. I stopped updating it daily for 3 reasons:

  1. I’ve been extremely busy building my startup;
  2. Taking photos of every juice was making the time slow down;
  3. I started repeating recipes over and over.

For the last few weeks I had a few ups and downs. While I’m trying to remain committed to the juice fast, it is getting harder and harder. I gave it a 4 days break during the hurricane Irene. I had friends over and I couldn’t see people eating in front of me without having a bite. If I was going to have a bite it had to be one of my favorite things on earth: Pork Butt. The hurricane only lasted 1 day, but the 11lb Pork Butt lasted 4.

Of course, my body didn’t handle it pretty well. First I couldn’t eat as much as I used to, which is a good thing. Second I felt like shit, making me wanting to go back to the juice fast right away. I gained 5lb during these 4 days, probably because of water retention.

After that I went back to my juice fast, lost 5lb in 2 days and I started to feel pretty good again. Some people have been asking me what exactly is better than before, here is a couple things:

  • Clarity of mind;
  • Extremely creative;
  • More productive and focused;
  • I’ve lost 25lb / 11.4kg;
  • More energy;
  • I don’t get tired walking up the subway stairs;
  • Better English speaking skills;
  • I’ve been reading and writing more.

I don’t know how much of these are related to the juice fast or to the fact that now I have my own business. But I’m sure it’s somewhat related. :)

The weather is getting colder in NYC and I’m starting to crave hot/solid food pretty badly. I’m making a complete list of all the things I want to eat and I’ll be posting the list here soon.

Besides feeling amazing and wanting to keep feeling that way for a long time, I’m not sure I can handle this for much longer. I’ll try badly.

After this whole experience I now have a huge respect for vegetarians, but I can’t deny my nature. As a Brazilian Viking I need to have a pork shank here and there. But I will find a balance to keep feeling great the way I’m feeling right now without having to give up the things I love for a long time again.

Day 14-21

I don’t feel like blogging this week. Keeping track of every single juice makes time pass slower day after day. I also have been extremely busy building my startup - BONDSY. Hopefully I will be back next week. Love.

My body feels great, but it was another meh day. It was hard to focus on anything and I was extremely impatient. Hopefully tomorrow gonna be better.

Lots of people have been asking me which juicer I’ve been using and if I like it. So here we go: It’s the Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite 1000-Watt Juice Extractor and I really like it. Super simple to clean and it’s beautiful, which helps as it will take a good space in your kitchen.

Day 11

Overall I was extremely unproductive compared to the days before. After starting to drink papaya and spirulina I’ve been feeling extremely full, and I even had heartburn. Not a great feeling, pretty similar to how I used to feel after eating a whole pork butt, without all the deliciousness of eating it. :)

One thing that I notice is that now I feel excited when I see some healthier dishes on a food magazine, cookbook or Food Network/Cooking Channel. Maybe, because I’m not able to eat anything I’m starting to crave everything, even a nice salad. It might be a good sign or just a sign that 2012 is getting closer.

Ps: Sometimes I’m repeating some juices recipes. I won’t take a new photo when it happens but I’ll post the photo again.

Day 10

It was a meh day. I received the new Food Network magazine that came with a little guide from the devil: “50 Things to Make with Bacon” (extremely recommended!). I spent the night reading it. It wasn’t a good idea…

Day 9

I felt great but for some reason I couldn’t drink much juice, so I had a lot of water. I also started drinking spirulina with my juices to increase my protein and chlorophyll intake.

My wife and I are keep playing the same game every day: What will we eat after the detox? And to make the game even worse, we watched No Reservations episode where Anthony Bourdain has his last meal at El Bulli. If you love food and you didn’t watch it yet, you should watch it now.

Day 8

Not an exciting day, I can’t lie. My body felt great, but my mind not so much. It’s getting harder to watch Food Network (major issue!). I’ve been trying to keep me busy as much as I can, and starting my own business is helping me a lot with that.

I’m totally getting sick of the the green juices, I’m basically drinking as it was medicine. The popsicles are saving my life as it’s a great way to get rid of the after taste of the green juices.

Tomorrow will be a better day.

Day 7

One week behind me, 53 days to go. It’s getting a little harder. I don’t feel hungry at all and I miss cooking more than eating, but I miss being social, having a beer with friends, cooking for them the most. At least BONDSY is keeping me extremely busy, in a great way.

Went for a walk yesterday and felt more tired than the days before. Hopefully some energy boost will follow on the next days. I also have to find some new vegetable juice recipes as I’m starting to get sick of some of them. At least the popsicles rock!

Wow, 10% of my juice fast done. Amazing experience, real eye-opening to show me how my body and brain can work better when it gets the right fuel. Not that I’ll only drink juice for the rest of my life, but I’ll definitely find the right balance after this.

Fuck yeah! Juice fast is doping. I feel amazing, extremely happy, excited, productive and starting to have more and more energy. Went for a walk and didn’t feel tired at all, I’ll probably starting to work out (cardio) on Monday.

Feeling

Felt amazingly well for the whole day, a little bit more energy than the days before. I can feel my skin getting thiner, which is pretty crazy. For some reason I can’t stop thinking about sesame bagels w/ cream cheese. My wife - who is also doing detox - and I are making a list of things we want to eat after the detox. She misses bread pretty badly. I have to be honest, I don’t miss meat as much as I thought I would.

I felt great the whole day. When I was about to start a headache I’d drink more water and the sensation would go away. I watched Food Network, it was hard but I can’t stop watching it, period. I couldn’t stop thinking about sesame seed bagels w/ cream cheese.
